Essay on 'Night' by Elie Wiesel

In the Holocaust memoir 'Night' by Elie Wiesel.

Three events that impacted me emotionally were Elie's dad getting beaten by the SS, Elie's sore foot infirmary and Elie's dad passing away. The sadness experienced by these people must have been horrific. In my essay I am going to use 4 languages that show this.

One event that affected me emotionally was Elie having a sore foot and going into the infirmary.

On page 78-79, in the middle of January, Eile's right foot began to swell from the cold and he could not stand on it, so he went to the infirmary. The doctor had then quoted "We need to operate! If we wait, the toes and perhaps leg will have to be amputated."

After Elie's operation on his right foot, next to him lied a Hungarian Jew suffering from dysentery. The Hungarian Jew had given Elie advice about the selections, he proceeded to say "Don't rejoice to soon, son. Here too there is selection. In fact, more often than outside. Germany has no need of sick Jews. Germany has no need of me. When the next transport arrives, you'll have a new neighbour. Therefore, listen to me: leave the infirmary before the next selection."

This has impacted me emotionally due to the pain Elie was going through in his right foot, it also affected me due to the guilt and grief therefore he couldn't move, stand or walk on his foot.

I have come to realise even at your lowest moments there are people out there that are willing to help other people in their darkest times.

My second event that impacted me emotionally was Elie's dad getting physically abused. On page 109 Elie's dad cried and said "Eliezer....Eliezer..tell them not to beat me...I haven't done anything...Why are they beating me?". They had beaten Elie's father as he could not stand or drag himself to relieve his bladder, his father was diagnosed with dysentery.

It has affected me emotionally as in his father getting beaten and diagnosed with dysentery, its an emotional scene as he passes away not long after this situation. It has made me realise how hard things were back in the days during the world wars 1 and 2, having to be sick during the times where bombs and guns were getting loaded and shot around seems to be hard to be in those shoes. It made me realise how mean and rough some of the Jews were towards each

other.

My third event that affected me emotionally was Elie's dad passing away.

On page 111 and 112 Elie's father was pleading out to Elie saying "My son...I'm burning up...My insides...".

"Eliezer...." he had also cried out before Elie had fallen asleep, the date was January 28, 1945.

Elie had fallen asleep and woken up on January 29 1945, Elie had noticed his father no longer in his bed but to find another sick person laying there instead.

This has affected me emotionally due to his father getting sent out to the crematorium and sadly passing due to his dysentery disease. This situation had made me realise how hard it would've been for Elie when he couldn't help his dad as the officer came closer and shouted for his father to be silent. This also made me realise how hard it would feel to find your dad or loved one not under the same bunk during these times as your hearing them pleading for your help the night before, also when you don't know where they've gone.
